Yuval Ne'eman was an Israeli theoretical physicist who, independently of Murray Gell-Mann, introduced the 'Eightfold Way' — the SU(3) classification of hadrons that led toward the quark model. A Jewish Israeli and former IDF officer, he founded Tel Aviv University's physics school and later co-founded a political party and served as a government minister. His symmetry classification was a decisive step in modern particle physics.
