How & why

Freund is an Israeli computer scientist, now at UC San Diego, who works in machine learning. With Robert Schapire he invented AdaBoost, a 'boosting' algorithm that combines many weak classifiers into a single accurate one, becoming a cornerstone method of machine learning. The pair received the Gödel Prize in 2003 for this work. He is an Israeli Jew.
