Vladimir Arnold is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Dynamical systems; KAM theory and Arnold diffusion
Arnold, whose mother was Jewish, came from a family of mathematicians and worked in Moscow and later Paris. As a young man he helped establish KAM theory (with Kolmogorov and Moser), which explains the stability of many dynamical systems, and he discovered the phenomenon now called Arnold diffusion; he also resolved part of Hilbert's thirteenth problem. He was renowned for a geometric, intuition-rich style and for defending merit against Soviet antisemitic discrimination.
