Vittorio Foa is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Antifascist imprisoned for eight years by Mussolini, then a leader of the Italian Resistance and one of the drafters of the Italian constitution.
Vittorio Foa was born into a middle-class Jewish family in Turin and studied at the Liceo Massimo d'Azeglio alongside Primo Levi, Leone Ginzburg and Norberto Bobbio. He joined the antifascist movement Giustizia e Libertà in 1933, was arrested by Mussolini's secret police in May 1935 and sentenced to fifteen years; he served eight, released only in August 1943. He came out of prison and went straight into the Resistance and the Action Party, sitting on the National Liberation Committee.
Elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1946, he was one of the seventy-five who wrote the constitution of the Italian Republic, and spent the rest of a long life as a trade unionist, deputy and senator.
