Simon bar Giora is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Leading Jewish commander in the defence of Jerusalem against the Roman siege of 70 CE.
Simon bar Giora was one of the principal Jewish commanders of the First Jewish-Roman War. He first fought Roman troops under Cestius Gallus in 66 CE, built a large following in the Judean countryside partly by freeing slaves, and by 69 CE was invited into Jerusalem, where he held the upper city with some fifteen thousand fighters during the Roman siege of 70 CE. After the city fell he hid in tunnels beneath the Temple Mount, was captured, taken to Rome, paraded in Titus's triumph and executed in 71 CE. He is known through Flavius Josephus's Jewish War, the only substantial source for his life.
