John of Gischala (Yohanan ben Levi) is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Galilean commander of the First Jewish-Roman War who defended Gischala and later helped lead the defence of Jerusalem in 70 CE.
John of Gischala was a Galilean leader of the First Jewish-Roman War (66-73 CE) who commanded the defence of his home town of Gischala, the last Galilean stronghold to fall. When Roman forces under Titus besieged it in 67 CE he obtained a delay and withdrew his people to Jerusalem overnight, where he became one of the principal commanders during the siege of the city in 70 CE. He was captured after the fall of Jerusalem and sentenced to life imprisonment in Rome. He is known almost entirely through Flavius Josephus, who was his personal rival in Galilee and writes about him with open hostility, so his portrait must be read with that bias in mind.
