Sarah Aaronsohn was born in 1890 in Zikhron Ya'akov, then part of the Ottoman Empire. With her brothers Aaron and Alexander Aaronsohn and Avshalom Feinberg she helped build NILI, a network of some forty people that passed intelligence on Ottoman forces to British agents offshore during the First World War, and she directed its operations locally. In October 1917 the Ottoman authorities arrested her at Zikhron Ya'akov after intercepting a carrier pigeon message; she endured four days of interrogation and torture and gave up no one. Allowed briefly into her home, she shot herself on 5 October 1917 and died of her wounds four days later, aged twenty-seven; the intelligence NILI supplied assisted the British campaign that ended Ottoman rule in the country.
