Born Sarika Yehoshua in Chalkis, Sara Fortis was sixteen when she and her mother fled into the mountains of Euboea in 1943 rather than wait for the deportations. She joined the local Greek resistance and did something no one else was doing: she went village to village recruiting young women, and built them into a fighting unit — the andartisses — that specialised in drawing German troops away from the areas other partisans meant to attack.
Their victories were often credited elsewhere, because it was assumed women could not have done it. By eighteen she was known across the region as 'Captain Sarika'. She fought until the liberation of Greece in late 1944 and later settled in Israel.
