Samuel Willenberg is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Survivor and fighter of the Treblinka revolt of 1943 — the last living survivor of the camp — and the sculptor of its memory.
Samuel Willenberg was nineteen when he was sent to Treblinka, where some 875,000 Jews were murdered; he was pulled out of the transport line to work and spent ten months there, and his two sisters were killed on arrival. He fought in the revolt of 2 August 1943 and escaped over the fence — one of about seventy of the camp's prisoners who lived. He fought in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, settled in Israel, and in his seventies began sculpting: fifteen bronze figures of what he had seen, so that a place designed to leave no witness would have one. He died in 2016, the last living survivor of Treblinka.
