Alfréd Wetzler escaped Auschwitz on 7 April 1944 with Rudolf Vrba, hidden under a woodpile while the guards searched, then walking a hundred and thirty kilometres to Slovakia. He dictated the Slovak text of what became the Vrba-Wetzler report — the first detailed, credible description of Auschwitz-Birkenau to reach the Allies. He stayed in Czechoslovakia after the war and published his account as a novel, What Dante Did Not See, under the pen name Jozef Lánik, and lived out his life in Bratislava, largely unrecognised by the regime.
