Rose Vesel was born in 1916 in Manchester to Polish-Jewish parents and grew up in New York, where she met Reuben Mattus, who sold his mother's ice cream from a horse-drawn cart in the Bronx. Married in 1936, they ran the business together for decades; when supermarket brands squeezed the small makers, they answered in 1960 with a richer ice cream under an invented Danish-sounding name, Häagen-Dazs. Rose handed out samples in grocery stores until the brand caught, and kept the books as comptroller until the 1983 sale to Pillsbury. An ardent Zionist, she spent her last decades in Jewish philanthropy; her memoir is called The Emperor of Ice Cream.
