Born Evelyn Hausner to a Jewish family in Vienna, she fled the Nazis as a baby — her parents traded the household silver for visas to Belgium — and reached New York a refugee. She married Leonard Lauder, joined the family firm, and became senior corporate vice president: it was Evelyn who created the Clinique brand, and even named it. Her larger invention came in 1992: with editor Alexandra Penney she formalized the pink ribbon as the symbol of breast-cancer awareness, then founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 1993, which has channeled hundreds of millions of dollars into research. A refugee child who ended up putting a ribbon on the whole world's lapel.
