Max Factor was born Maksymilian Faktorowicz to a Polish Jewish family, one of four children whose father could not afford to school them. After making wigs and cosmetics for the Russian imperial court he emigrated in 1904 to the United States, where he formulated greasepaint that would not crack under studio lights, invented pancake make-up and lip gloss, and took the theatrical word 'make-up' into ordinary speech. The company he founded made cosmetics an everyday industry, and he received an honorary Academy Award in 1929.
