Rabbi Tarfon was a Jewish sage (Tanna) of the third generation after the destruction of the Second Temple, active around Yavneh and Lydda in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries CE. A priest (Kohen) by descent, he is cited many times throughout the Mishnah and is remembered for the maxim that one is not obliged to complete the work, yet not free to desist from it. Precise birth and death dates are not recorded.
