Eliezer ben Hyrcanus is recognized among Jewish contributors to Historical & Religious Figures — Prominent Tannaitic sage of the generation after the Temple's destruction
Eliezer ben Hyrcanus was one of the most influential Tannaim, the rabbinic sages of the generation after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. A leading disciple of Yohanan ben Zakkai, he is cited hundreds of times in the Mishnah and Talmud and headed an academy at Lod. He was a foundational rabbi of early rabbinic Judaism, so his Jewish identity is intrinsic to his life's work.
