How & why

Rabbi Joshua ben Hananiah was one of the foremost Tannaitic sages of the generation after the destruction of the Second Temple, a leading disputant at the academy of Yavneh whose teachings are cited throughout the Mishnah and Talmud. A Levite who had served in the Temple, he was also known for defending Judaism in debates with Roman authorities and for restraining a revolt. He was a Jewish rabbinic sage.
