How & why
Rabbi Meir was a leading tannaitic sage of the 2nd century CE whose legal opinions pervade the Mishnah; tradition holds that an anonymous ruling in the Mishnah generally reflects his view. A foremost student of Rabbi Akiva, he was among the architects of the foundational text of rabbinic Judaism. He was Jewish.
