Shammai is recognized among Jewish contributors to Historical & Religious Figures — Mishnaic sage and founder of the School of Shammai
Shammai was one of the leading Jewish sages of the Second Temple period and, with Hillel, one of the last of the 'zugot' (pairs) who led the Sanhedrin. He founded the School of Shammai (Beit Shammai), whose rulings on Jewish law are recorded throughout the Mishnah, generally taking a stricter line than the rival House of Hillel. His debates shaped the foundations of rabbinic Judaism.
