Isaac Alfasi (the Rif) was a North African rabbi and codifier whose halakhic compendium, the 'Sefer ha-Halakhot', distilled the Talmud into practical law and became a foundation for later codes, including Maimonides and the Shulchan Aruch. Forced to flee to Muslim Spain late in life, he headed the great academy of Lucena. He was one of the foremost rabbinic authorities of the Jewish Middle Ages.
