Biography

Paul Steinhardt is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; cosmological inflation and quasicrystals

How & why

Steinhardt, an American theoretical physicist of Jewish background at Princeton, helped develop the theory of cosmic inflation that explains the large-scale structure of the universe, and later proposed rival cyclic models. Independently he predicted quasicrystals, ordered but non-periodic solids, and led an expedition that found the first natural one in a meteorite. His work spans cosmology and condensed matter.
