Erast Gliner was a Soviet-born physicist who, in a 1965 paper, proposed that a vacuum-like state with negative pressure could drive an accelerating, exponential expansion of the universe — effectively the first theoretical description of what is now called dark energy and a forerunner of the theory of cosmic inflation.
