Biography

Nachmanides is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Medieval Jewish scholar, philosopher, and kabbalist

How & why

Nachmanides (Moses ben Nahman, the Ramban) was a leading medieval Jewish scholar — Talmudist, biblical exegete, philosopher, physician and kabbalist — whose Torah commentary blends legal, philosophical and mystical readings and remains studied to this day. A devout Jewish authority, he defended Judaism at the 1263 Disputation of Barcelona before King James I of Aragon, and later settled in the Land of Israel, helping to revive Jewish life in Jerusalem and Acre.
