How & why

Born in Brooklyn to a Jewish family, Panish was a physical chemist at Bell Labs. With Izuo Hayashi he achieved in 1970 the first semiconductor laser that could operate continuously at room temperature, using a double-heterostructure design. This breakthrough made compact, practical lasers possible and is the foundation of fiber-optic communication, optical storage and barcode scanners; he shared the Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology in 2001.
