Born Herbert Brovarnik to Ukrainian-Jewish immigrants in London and raised in Chicago, Brown developed the chemistry of organoboranes, opening a versatile route (hydroboration) to build complex organic molecules with precise control. This gave chemists powerful new synthetic tools used across pharmaceuticals and materials, and earned him the 1979 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, shared with Georg Wittig. He remained an active researcher at Purdue University for decades.
