Biography

David Julius is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering receptors for temperature and touch

How & why

Julius, from a Russian Jewish immigrant family in Brooklyn, used natural molecules as tools to find how we sense temperature and touch. Using capsaicin, the compound that makes chili peppers hot, he identified the receptor that detects heat, and later the receptor that detects cold. These discoveries of temperature and touch receptors earned him a share of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
