Adrian Krainer is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Developed the first drug for spinal muscular atrophy (nusinersen); Wolf Prize in Medicine (2021)
Born to a Jewish family of Hungarian and Romanian descent in Montevideo, Krainer spent decades studying how cells splice RNA and then applied that knowledge to disease. Working with Ionis, he designed nusinersen (Spinraza), an antisense drug that corrects splicing of the SMN2 gene and became the first approved treatment for spinal muscular atrophy. He received the Wolf Prize in Medicine in 2021.
