Mikhail Botvinnik is recognized among Jewish contributors to Sports — World Chess Champion 1948-1963
How & why
Botvinnik was World Chess Champion for much of 1948–1963 and the founding father of the Soviet school of chess, training future champions Karpov, Kasparov and Kramnik. Born to a Jewish family near St. Petersburg, he was also a pioneering electrical engineer and computer-chess researcher.
