Biography

Wilhelm Steinitz is recognized among Jewish contributors to Sports — First undisputed World Chess Champion (1886) and father of the modern positional school of chess.

How & why

Steinitz became the first undisputed World Chess Champion in 1886 and founded the modern positional (scientific) school, replacing romantic all-out attack with the principled accumulation of small advantages. He was born into a poor Jewish family in the Prague ghetto, one of many children of a Jewish hardware merchant. He held the world title until 1894.
