Michael Mark Woolfson was a British theoretical physicist and crystallographer who developed 'direct methods' for solving the crystallographic phase problem, allowing molecular crystal structures to be determined from X-ray diffraction data alone. Software from his York laboratory, notably the MULTAN package, was used to solve roughly half of all crystal structures determined in the 1970s and 1980s. He was Jewish.
