Biography

Jerome Karle is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — X-ray Crystallography

How & why

Jerome Karle, born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, worked for decades at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. With Herbert Hauptman he devised 'direct methods' — mathematical techniques that extract the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms directly from X-ray diffraction data, without guesswork. These methods made it routine to determine the structures of countless molecules, from medicines to natural products, and earned them the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
