Meir Har-Zion, born in Herzliya in 1934, was the outstanding field fighter of Israel's first decade. He was a founding member of Unit 101 in 1953 and then served in the 890th Paratroop Battalion under Ariel Sharon, leading or taking part in many of the cross-border reprisal raids of the 1950s, when Israel's frontiers were long and thinly held. Chief of Staff Moshe Dayan described him as “the finest of our commando soldiers, the best soldier ever to emerge in the IDF.” Severely wounded in the throat and arm in September 1956, he could not return to full active command; he lived afterwards as a farmer above the Jordan Valley and died there in 2014.
