Lincoln Wolfenstein was an American theoretical physicist whose 1978 work showed that neutrinos passing through matter feel an extra effective potential, altering their oscillations — the basis of the Mikheyev–Smirnov–Wolfenstein (MSW) effect that explains the solar neutrino problem. He taught for decades at Carnegie Mellon University. He was Jewish.
