Halperin is a theoretical physicist who shaped modern condensed-matter theory: with David Nelson he developed the theory of two-dimensional melting (KTHNY theory), and he made central contributions to the theory of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects. He won the 2003 Wolf Prize in Physics and has taught at Harvard for decades. He was born in Brooklyn into a Jewish family of Eastern European origin; both parents were born in Ukraine and immigrated to the United States as children.
