Vainshtein, a Soviet-born Jewish theoretical physicist who was blacklisted under the Brezhnev regime for wishing to emigrate to Israel before eventually reaching the United States, made deep contributions to quantum chromodynamics, instanton effects and the theory of the strong interaction. His work on operator product expansions and heavy-quark physics is foundational. He received the Sakurai Prize (1999) and the Pomeranchuk Prize (2005).
