Bruno Pontecorvo was an Italian nuclear physicist, one of Enrico Fermi's 'Via Panisperna boys', who did pioneering work on neutrinos — proposing neutrino oscillations and the muon/electron neutrino distinction — foundational ideas later confirmed and honored with Nobel Prizes to others. He came from a prominent Italian-Jewish family; in 1950 he defected to the Soviet Union, continuing his research at Dubna.
