How & why

Kanner was a child psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins who in 1943 published the first clinical description of 'early infantile autism', giving the condition its enduring name and founding the field of child psychiatry in the United States. His textbook 'Child Psychiatry' was the first English work on the subject. Born to a Jewish family in Galicia, he emigrated to America in the 1920s.
