Claudia Sheinbaum is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — President of Mexico since 2024 — the first woman and the first person of Jewish heritage to hold the office; a climate scientist and lead author for the IPCC before politics.
Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo carries both halves of the Jewish diaspora in one family: her paternal grandfather Chone Juan Sheinbaum Abramovitz left Lithuania for Mexico in 1928, and her mother, the biologist Annie Pardo Cemo, comes from a Sephardic family that reached Mexico in 1946 fleeing the persecution of Bulgaria's Jews. The household was Jewish and religiously unobservant, and scientific: her father a chemist, her mother a biologist, her brother a physicist.
She took a doctorate in energy engineering at UNAM, wrote part of her thesis at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and served as a contributing and then lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — the body that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. She governed Mexico City from 2018 to 2023 and in 2024 won the presidency in a landslide, becoming the 66th president of Mexico — the first woman, and the first person of Jewish heritage, to hold the office.
