Biography

Alexandre Millerand is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — President of France (1920-24) and prime minister, of Alsatian Jewish descent on his mother's side; earlier the first socialist minister in a European government.

How & why

Son of a mother of Alsatian Jewish origin, Alexandre Millerand was a lawyer for strikers before he was a statesman. In 1899 he became the first socialist to sit in a European government, and as minister of commerce he wrote the laws that cut the working day and created labour inspection. He was prime minister in 1920 and then President of the French Republic until 1924 — the first French head of state of Jewish descent. Raised outside the Jewish faith, he is here by the descent route the site states openly.
