Laurent Schwartz is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Distribution Theory in Mathematics
Born into an Alsatian Jewish family, Schwartz hid under a false identity in Vichy France before developing the theory of distributions, which gave rigorous mathematical meaning to objects such as the Dirac delta and unified differential equations with physics. For this he received the Fields Medal in 1950, the first French mathematician so honored.
