Fuchs is a Hungarian-American mathematician regarded as the leading authority on the theory of abelian groups and modules, whose treatise Infinite Abelian Groups became the standard reference. A survivor of persecution in wartime Hungary, he taught for decades at Tulane University. He is Jewish and turned 100 in 2024.
