Julius Bernstein

Bernstein was a German physiologist who proposed the membrane theory of the nerve impulse, explaining the electrical action of nerves and muscles in terms of ion concentrations across the cell membrane — a foundation of modern electrophysiology. He came from a Jewish family in Berlin; his uncle was the writer and scientist Aaron Bernstein.
