Juan Luis Vives was a Renaissance humanist philosopher and pioneer of educational reform and early psychology whose 'De anima et vita' examined the emotions before Descartes. He worked in Leuven, England and Bruges and corresponded with Erasmus and Thomas More. He came from a family of Valencian conversos (Jews forced to convert); several relatives, including his father, were persecuted and executed by the Spanish Inquisition — a documented Jewish (converso) ancestry.
