Alexander Men was a Russian Orthodox priest, theologian and religious philosopher who became a spiritual guide to many during the Soviet era and was murdered with an axe in 1990, a killing that remains unsolved. He wrote widely on the history of religion and on Christ, and championed a tolerant, open Christianity. He was of Jewish descent, born to a Jewish family in Moscow and baptised as an infant.
