Azariah dei Rossi is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Renaissance scholar and pioneering critical historian; author of 'Me'or Enayim', which applied historical and philological method to Jewish tradition
Azariah dei Rossi, of the eminent Italian-Jewish Min ha-Adummim family, was the foremost Jewish scholar of the Italian Renaissance. His major work, 'Me'or Enayim' ('Light of the Eyes', Mantua 1573–75), applied historical, chronological and philological method to Jewish tradition — questioning received chronology and drawing on Greek, Latin and Christian sources — making him a pioneer of critical Jewish historiography. The book sparked fierce rabbinic controversy yet became foundational to the modern scholarly study of Judaism.
