How & why

Joseph Karo was a Sephardic Jewish legal scholar whose family was expelled from Spain in 1492; settling ultimately in Safed, he compiled the 'Shulchan Aruch' (1565), which became the authoritative code of Jewish law still followed today. He also wrote the vast 'Beit Yosef' commentary and mystical works. He was one of the foremost rabbinic authorities in Jewish history.
