Moses Isserles, known by the acronym the Rema, was a leading Polish rabbi, halakhic authority and Talmudist who also wrote on astronomy, philosophy and Kabbalah. His glosses (the 'Mappah') to Joseph Karo's Shulhan Arukh recorded Ashkenazi custom, so that the combined work became the authoritative code of Jewish law for Ashkenazi Jewry. He was a central figure of Polish Jewry's golden age.
