John Broome, born Irving Broome to a Jewish family in 1913, was the quiet architect of DC's Silver Age. In Showcase #4 (1956) he wrote the second Barry Allen story, then became the Flash's defining writer for a decade — the Rogues, the multiverse-founding 'Flash of Two Worlds' era, the wit. With artist Gil Kane he co-created the Hal Jordan Green Lantern (1959) and the Guardians of the Universe, and he created the Elongated Man.
A restless traveller who eventually settled in Japan to teach English, he wrote some of the most imitated superhero comics ever published while staying nearly unknown to the public.
