How & why

Robert Kanigher, born in 1915 to Romanian Jewish immigrants, wrote and edited comics at DC for four decades. In Showcase #4 (1956) he scripted 'Mystery of the Human Thunderbolt!', the story generally counted as the opening of comics' Silver Age, which reinvented the Flash as police scientist Barry Allen. He created Sgt. Rock, the definitive soldier of American war comics, co-created Black Canary (1947), the Metal Men (1962) and Poison Ivy (1966), and after William Moulton Marston's death wrote Wonder Woman for more than twenty years. Prodigiously prolific and famously difficult, he shaped DC's output like few others.
