Chris Claremont

Chris Claremont is Jewish on his mother's side and lived on a kibbutz in Israel in his youth. From 1975 to 1991 he wrote Uncanny X-Men — longer than any other writer — and in doing so created Rogue, Mystique, Gambit, Kitty Pryde, Emma Frost and the Dark Phoenix Saga, and made Magneto a Holocaust survivor whose politics follow from what was done to him. The series he inherited had been cancelled for poor sales; he left it the best-selling comic in the world, and its reading of mutants as a persecuted minority has shaped every adaptation since.
