Harry Harrison's mother, Ria Kirjassoff, was Russian Jewish. He began as a comics illustrator, then wrote Make Room! Make Room! (1966), the overpopulation novel filmed as Soylent Green, the comic Stainless Steel Rat books and Bill, the Galactic Hero, a satire of military science fiction. He was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 2009.
